Pet Collector

Some people are cursed in life with addictions to drugs or alcohol. I don't make light of this, but I have an addiction that is, if not as serious in it's impact on my health or the lives of others, just as serious in the power it has over me. I am a compulsive collector. Once I get a little taste of something like Magic: The Gathering or Pokemon, it becomes an obsession (gotta catch 'em all, indeed). So naturally, pet collecting in WoW was inevitable.

I started collecting pets in WoW right out of the gate at release - back when there weren't too many and they took up inventory slots. One of the greatest strengths of WoW has always been that it offers so many different areas of interest, and so many bars by which to measure "accomplishment" and "advancement" (yes, I use quotes there - I know as well as anyone that it's just a game and that there is only accomplishment and advancement in terms of entertainment value). But my collecting continued - not just on one character, but on all of them.

I took a break from the game for the second half of Cataclysm, in no small part because there wasn't anything more for me to collect at the time. I didn't come back for Mists because I had stopped following WoW news. I had broken the spell that collecting had over me (in WoW at least). That is until a devious former guild member who was trying to get more people back into the game emailed me and let me know about the new battle pet system (he knew it would have me running to buy it immediately, and he was right). To this day I hate him for that email, I don't think he knows what he did. Seeing the new pet collecting tab, soooo many new pets to collect, pet battles, and so on - it was as potent as any drug. I went from 190 pets upon coming back to Mists all the way to 500 unique in just 5 weeks. I missed a lot of hours of sleep and more than a little work.

I haven't taken any significant breaks from the game since. I've had them all on several occasions, but as we all know, there are always going to be more. I'm now all geared up for Beefa, and can't wait to have so many new pets to go after again. Yes, it's one part fun and entertainment, and one part mental illness. It helps that I'm aware of it and have a boyfriend to keep me grounded, This site has been more helpful to me than any other in the past couple expansions, and I'm incredibly greatful to Aranesh and to the community for sharing strategies and making my collecting easier and more efficient.
