Blackrock Depths

You've battled your way through multiple pet dungeons, against a wide variety of foes, and you've been victorious. However, in the beginning of your journey you couldn't help but notice there was something not quite right with the enemy pets, as though they'd somehow been changed. Then, your suspicions were confirmed in Gnomeregan, as you encountered sinister figures cloaked in shadows. Now you've cornered them in Blackrock Depths, and you'll finally get to see what these fiendish villains have been plotting...and building.

Welcome to the new pet dungeon: Blackrock Depths! This is a 9-stage pet dungeon, and there doesn’t seem to be much walking inside this one. Rejoice!

That said, if you’d like to try your hand at this, you’ll need to find Radek Fuselock (Horde) or Tizzy Gearjolt (Alliance) to pick up the breadcrumb quest: Shadowy Showdown and your character needs to be at least level 50.

Once you’ve picked it up, you’ll need to head over to Blackrock Mountain.
It can be accessed from either Searing Gorge or Burning Steppes. Once inside, find the chain that connects downward toward the lava, and has two doorways.

Take the doorway without the elf, and cut left toward the Grinding Quarry. Once inside, your map changes, and you should be able to see the entrance to Blackrock Depths.

The NPC you’re meeting—Burt Macklyn—is just before the entrance to the BRD dungeon, and to the left. His text reads:

“My superior investigation techniques have followed these shadowy figures just inside. Another massive case solved, just days before I retire. Checkmate, bad guys.”

When you hand in Shadowy Showdown, he says; “These Shadowy Figures have been an annoyance for too long now. Get in there, and stop them.”

You then need to accept the quest: Shadows of Blackrock. Once you accept, head on in!

A successful run rewards you with a Shadowy Gem, used to purchase the following pets from Burt:

Wailing Lasher
Experiment 13
Tinyclaw
Xu-Fu can scan this section for the most suitable strategies according to your preferences and show the required pets.
The Regular option will allow using pets multiple times.
Heroic mode will use each pet only once due to the restriction of no healing.

First time posting and want to say thanks to all the contributors - I've been a lurker for a long time and have enjoyed this website a bunch.

Looking for some help... Last week I ran the BRD dungeon and it was on normal mode. After the reset, I've come back to run it on challenge/heroic mode, and for the life of me, I don't see how to make the change! There is only one quest (from Burt Macklyn) and no other means to switch the instance.

How do you enter the instance in challenge/heroic mode?

Thanks!

Went into the dungeon and noted that it was in Challenge mode, so apparently after the first completion, it's on challenge mode for the following attempts.

Gráinne

Ues, that is correct. "Normal" mode, where you can heal, never happens after you turn in the first quest for it.

After that, it's always Challenge mode.

a little bug i noticed when generating the heroic table for both this and gnomeregan, it appears that any team with a specific pet type like elemental seems to be ignored as a non-option. like this team for example doesn't come up as an option despite dream whelpling being owned and leveled by me and not present in any other encounters https://www.wow-petguide.com/Strategy/7108/Shred

I've beat the dungeon on both normal and heroic modes now, and neither time did Tasha offer to let me join the team (other than the normal "cutscene" dialogue - no actual option). Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to talk to someone else in there?

Alayea

wrote on 2022-11-14 07:01:13

You're doing nothing wrong. Tasha Riley should have a gossip option that will let you "join" the team and earn the title Minion of Mayhem. Tasha bugging out has been a recurring problem since she was first added in patch 8.3.0.

Fortunately, it seems Shadowlands added a second way to obtain the title just by obtaining the pet Carpal, which you can either assemble together yourself or buy it from the Auction House. (Don't be surprised if there's a delay in being granted the title, though.)

Great guide thank you, and the functionality of being able to use strats based on my own collection is fantastic, the table comes in very handy when looking for 'any level 25 pet' so I don't use one which will be needed later.

Can the dungeons be accessed in normal mode, once overcome in Heroic, in order to heal and polish strategies?

Paul#16227

wrote on 2021-04-24 06:27:54

just do that on heroic mode. if a strat fails just switch to an alt and bandage and you wont be disconnected from the dungeon

Nmyler

wrote on 2021-04-24 12:34:12

Thank you. Although sometimes when changing to an alt, he tells me, this team of pets is blocked because this account is connected 2 times, and it does not let me use bandages either. (edited)

Huglover

wrote on 2021-06-24 16:29:06

Not an alt on another account, an alt on the same account I believe.... unfortunately - you cannot pet battle from two accounts bound together with a single battle id... - that is regular functionality

Erm... how do you leave the dungeon after the fights? I had to heart out and return to deliver the quest.

Gráinne

wrote on 2021-04-10 03:45:42

Right-click your portrait and choose "Leave Instance".

Same as random dungeons, but it gets a lot of people because you didn't teleport in, so you don't expect "Leave" to teleport you out to the entrance. :)

Wow! This is such a cool feature when you add your collection in and have it tailored to what you have. Makes it so easy to see what I need to level up before going in there. Thank you! (edited)

as of 1.10.21 I was able to pick this up from Radek WITHOUT beating the challenge modes of the other ones. I only have the WC achieve but I have done the rest on normal mode. Got Shadowy Showdown from Radek, went to BRD, talked to Burt, got the quest Shadows of Blackrock, and zoned into the pet dungeon without any problems.

I have a small issue with the table. It says that I need 2 Menagerie Custodian. One for Liz and one for Ralf. The one for Liz have to be H/P. I have 2 of them already, one H/P and one H/S. It have matched the H/S with the Liz fight and the H/P with Ralf. Both rare lvl 25.
I don't know if it's something that should be fixed, just thought I would let you know! :)

Teddymouse

This needs fixed as it is telling me I need 4 Ikky's for Heroic. Unless you lucked out for some reason and got to have 4...3's the max.

Aranesh

Yeah I got that noted down as a bug / issue to add:

Has to wait a bit, couple of tougher bugs to crack first. To address this for you, you can go to the individual strategies and pick a different one that works for you, then favourite that (the heart on top). Favourite strategy always overrides any other criteria :)

Anyone who has their collection scanned and sees you need 3 Ikkys, you don't as 2 of those fights alternate, so they're never on the same week.

I promise you, I have been in here over and over, I have been doing pet battles and pet battle dungeons from the time they started. But I cannot even beat the first one in here at all. This is the most frustrated I have ever been. lol

Gráinne

How can you not beat Horu? What's going wrong? Marionette is so strong here that there are several ways to follow up, and your roster is very strong.

I see you have a comment about it failing here:
https://wow-petguide.com/?Comment=71661
but you never followed up to explain exactly what went wrong. DragonsAfterDark is amazingly good about following up problems that are clearly reported, and I and others do it occasionally as well, so if you can narrow it down, I'm sure somebody can help.

You have to have completed all previous dungeons on challenge mode to access BRD.

When done, don't leave yet!! Be sure to try talking to all the chars and one of them gives you the option to join their club or something. Then it gave me some rep with some faction. Sorry for lack of details, was super late and so sleepy, but wanted to mention the basic message, talk to them before leaving.

Gráinne

What you get is the title "Minion of Mayhem".

If you don't take it this week, you can choose again next time you complete it.

Eulorea wrote on 2020-04-06 20:20:31

n case anyone besides me can't figure out how to get OUT of the dungeon once you've beaten it, just right click your avatar and select leave instance group. Took me forever, since this isn't the usual way to leave these pet dungeons.

Daera wrote on 2020-01-20 11:10:53

Most challenging of the dungeons. Thanks to all for the remarkable and utterly brilliant strategies in this guide. I had to level a handful of pets (4 or so?) in order to access the highest ratest strats, after failing with other strats using the pets I had. Definitely needs a way to travel easily between the instance site and Boralus/Zandalar. Advise using an Alliance character if available rather than Horde until the travel issue is addressed--it's much easier to get to the dungeon site as Alliance than as Horde.

You can take the pet dungeon port to gnomeregan and then fly

Rubyu wrote on 2020-02-04 06:18:40

Or if you have the direbrew remote it will take you right inside the entrance of BRD

NobodyNPart

wrote on 2020-01-21 22:13:09

I didn't see this mentioned. There is no escape mechanic at the end unlike the other pet dungeons. Select Leave the Instance from the instance minimap icon. You will return to Burt Macklyn, at the instance entrance to turn in the quest or return to the pet dungeon. (edited)

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-01-25 02:01:14

I'll add a note to this. Today I deliberately spent a couple of hours trying different strats. In the middle, I logged out for a while, and when I relogged found myself still in the dungeon. Usually, if you log out in a pet dungeon, you are dropped from group, left outside, and your progress is reset, but that didn't happen to me this time. At the end of the session, there was no Leave Instance Group option, as there usually is.

I tried disabling addons and /reload but the option didn't reappear.

I had to teleport out and get a port back from Manapoof to turn in the quest.

I presume the absence of the usual Leave Instance Group option was because I had logged out. So while Leave Instance Group is usually the way, if you logged out during your session as I did, it may be possible that you will have to hearth.

Lazey

wrote on 2020-01-25 04:04:56

afaik you never left a (pet) dungeon when you logged out long enough, you are set back to the entrance then but still inside the scenario/dungeon with a reset when you didn't finish and your progress saved when you did.
But some sort of dialogue option added to be able to leave without hearthing/tp would be nice here, thank god I had Direbrews Remote on PTR when one of my chars was living in BRD ;-)

First, thank you, everyone, for the amazing guides. There were some I never would have solved without you. I have done it in both Challenge and Normal now.

So, my question. Once you complete challenge mode, does Manapoof offer to teleport you back there from then on, like with the other pet dungeons? Wondering if he is glitched not offering to. (edited)

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-01-21 12:26:09

It's currently a bug. He should be offering the teleport but isn't. We'll just have to wait for Blizzard to fix it.

I must have the worst RNG luck. I have failed Therian so many times. I did somehow get him on the first time thru but now that it counts i cannot get him no matter what strategy. Hoping that taking a week off for vacation either has RNG on my side or additional options are developed. I have never had such bad luck following what others much better than I am have developed. Really appreciate all the work that goes into this.

It's a scenario, usually it works with "Leave Instance Group" on your character portrait if you didn't log out in the scenario for too long... then you lose that option. Hearthstone should always work and all other teleports like (best case) Direbrews Remote.
